In his original experiment, Reynolds injected dye into a clear glass pipe. For laminar flow the dye forms a thin straight streak, which slightly blurs due to molecular diffusion. For high flow-rates the dye is rapidly dispersed across the diameter of the pipe, characteristic of turbulent flow.

Repeat Reynolds experiment

  1. Specify the Reynolds number and observe the flow.
  2. Decide whether the flow is laminar, turbulent, or transitional.
  3. Graph the flow regime vs. the Reynolds number.
