What happens when the flow is somewhere in between laminar and turbulent? This situation is called transitional flow. In this case the fluid cannot decide whether it should be laminar or turbulent. As a result, the flow pattern and velocity profile is difficult to predict. Sometimes the flow is laminar-like, and sometimes it is turbulent-like. Results from experiments performed in this regime are difficult to reproduce.
